Osteoarthritis (OA)

Vitalia’s Approach to Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is often described as wear and tear on the joints.  Joint pain and swelling is typically worse in the morning and after periods of rest.  For some, pain improves with motion and activity. Swelling and degradation of cartilage contribute to narrowing of the joint space and chronic pain.

If a patient with osteoarthritis is overweight, they will benefit from losing body fat and increasing muscle mass which will decrease the stress on the joints.  An anti-inflammatory diet is beneficial for all patients with osteoarthritis, as chronic inflammation will increase swelling and pain.  Also some osteoarthritis patients will benefit from removing nightshade vegetables from their diet.  These include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and all types of peppers.  At Vitalia, we do food sensitivity and blood type testing to identify foods the patient is eating that is contributing to the progression of OA.
