Colitis/Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Vitalia’s Approach to Colitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a general term for a group of chronic inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract.  The two most common are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC).  Crohn’s disease is characterized by intermittent episodes of diarrhea, abdominal pain and often fever, loss of appetite and malaise.  In Ulcerative colitis, the inflammation is severe enough to cause bloody diarrhea often with cramps and severe abdominal pain.  Weight loss and fever may also accompany Ulcerative colitis.

What are some of the possible causes of Inflammatory Bowel disease?

Research has shown that dietary factors play a role in the development of these conditions.  The incidence of Crohn’s disease is increasing in cultures consuming a “western diet”.  Scientific research has shown that people who consume more refined sugar, refined carbohydrates and less fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber are more likely to develop Crohn’s disease.  Corn flakes, which are a highly refined carbohydrate and a common allergen, have specifically been linked to Crohn’s.

Once Inflammatory bowel disease is present, many vitamin and mineral deficiencies may develop due to the patient being on a restricted diet combined with a decreased absorption of nutrients from the digestive tract. At Vitalia, we have helped many patients with inflammatory bowel disease to regain control of their condition, decrease flare-ups and improve their diet.  This is accomplished through specific, individualized testing and treatment, diet changes and natural remedies that are used to heal the intestinal tract. Call us today to schedule your appointment and get started on a treatment plan that is specific to your needs!
